How to Choose Paint Colors for a Cohesive and Beautiful Home

Color palette

Choosing the right paint color can feel overwhelming—there are so many options out there! And it’s not just about picking a color you like—it’s about choosing shades that work together and create a natural flow from room to room. Whether you're refreshing one space or tackling your whole home, here are my go-to tips for selecting colors with confidence.

Start with What You Love

Look around your space. Is there a rug, piece of art, or fabric that you’re especially drawn to? That’s a great starting point. These pieces often already reflect your personal taste, so pull color inspiration from them.

If your room has existing finishes that are staying—like wood cabinets, tile, or a brick fireplace—be sure to factor those in. For example, if your kitchen cabinets have a warm red undertone, choose a wall color that complements it, not clashes with it.

Want to highlight architectural details like moldings or built-ins? You can paint them in a contrasting shade or simply use the same wall color in a different sheen—like satin or gloss—for a subtle but elevated look.

Think About Scale and Light

Color can completely shift how a space feels. Lighter shades tend to open up a room, making it feel airy and expansive. Darker tones, on the other hand, create coziness and intimacy—perfect for large rooms or spaces where you want a little drama.

Designer tip:  In long or narrow spaces, try painting the shorter walls a slightly deeper color to visually bring them forward. And if you’re working with low ceilings, keep them lighter to create a sense of height.

Also remember that color changes throughout the day. Natural daylight, warm bulbs, even candlelight can all shift how a color reads. That’s why I always recommend sampling paint in your space—never choose straight from the store. Test a few swatches on your wall and watch how they change from morning to night.

Create a Flow from Room to Room

Want your home to feel more cohesive? Choose shades that come from the same color family, or use a consistent undertone throughout. You don’t need every room to match, but they should relate to each other.

Neutrals are a great way to create visual breathing room—especially between bolder rooms. Hallways, transition areas, and even trim are all perfect spots to use a soft neutral or a favorite white. And if you're using white paint throughout your home (on trim, ceilings, or cabinetry), stick with the same white for consistency.

Take a look at how we created flow in this modern home in Jackson, NJ. We went from a barely there green in the main space to a more vibrant green in the sunroom that brings in the greenery from the surroundings just outside the window. The result is an ease of flow. Your eye is naturally drawn to the next room.

Let the Room's Function Guide You

Color plays a huge role in how a room feels. Think about how you want to feel in each space. Cozy and relaxed? Energized and inspired?

Designer tip:  Warm colors (like soft yellows, terracottas, and warm taupes) are great for social areas like living rooms and kitchens. Cool tones (like blues, greens, and serene neutrals) are ideal for bedrooms, bathrooms, and offices where you want a more peaceful vibe.

For example with this TV room in Monmouth County, NJ, we went dark and moody. We wanted this space to feel cozy and inviting, like being wrapped with a warm blanket. Taking our cues from the lush gardens outside, we went with Benjamin Moore Knoxville Gray—a gorgeous green gray that coordinates with the curtains and the mint leather recliners in the space. The result is luxurious, comfortable living room.

The Bottom Line

Paint has the power to completely transform a room—but it doesn’t have to be stressful. Start with what you love, test in your space, and consider how each room connects to the next. With a little planning, you can create a home that feels thoughtful, pulled together, and uniquely yours.
