Nature Inspired: Inside a Lakeside Golf Community Home in Ocean County, NJ by Juliette Sebastian Interiors

Sunroom with nature-inspired decor

When we first met our clients, they were settling into a new chapter—a retired couple trading the pace of city life for the calm of a golf community, surrounded by lush greenery and a lake view that features a beautiful water fountain. Their new home had wonderful potential and a beautiful setting; it simply needed to reflect who they are and what they love.

These clients are avid gardeners, bird watchers, and seasoned travelers with an impressive collection of chinoiserie pieces gathered from around the world. Our goal was to weave all those passions together—to create spaces that feel vibrant and alive, yet deeply serene.

Our Design Strategy

Let nature lead the way

From the moment you step inside, the connection to the outdoors is undeniable. Inspired by the lake and surrounding greenery, we layered shades of green throughout the home, complemented by floral and bird-patterned textiles that celebrate the couple’s love of nature. Every room feels in conversation with the view beyond its windows from the colors to the patterns to the warm textures.

In this dining room, the red silk area rug—purchased during a trip to China—connects to the red robins featured in the curtains, while the light fixture mimics wisteria.

Design for living beautifully—now and for years to come

Because this was a home meant for aging in place, every design decision balanced elegance with ease.

We renovated all bathrooms for comfort, accessibility, and safety—removing barriers, creating space to move about easily, designing storage, installing heated floors, and strategically adding grab bars.

We enhanced lighting throughout the home. From ceiling fixtures, to sconces and lamps and picture lights, each piece was carefully curated for function and style.

Furniture pieces scaled appropriately for the home’s larger proportions were expertly selected. In the dining room, the oversized buffet serves as storage for the multiple china collections the homeowners have. The large scale art piece anchors the wall, while the oval dining table serves up to 12 people.

A kitchen refresh that shines
The kitchen received a thoughtful update—painted cabinetry, a fresh backsplash, new countertops, and updated lighting. We added a soft, botanical wallpaper that ties the space back to the surrounding landscape, giving the heart of the home a fresh, inviting feel without a full renovation.

Spaces made for gathering
In the family room, comfort was the priority. A plush sectional and a casual game table make this the perfect spot for the couple’s grandchildren to gather and play. The design balances function and warmth, creating a space that’s relaxed yet cohesive with the rest of the home.

Honor their collections

The couple’s family heirlooms and extensive chinoiserie pieces became the heart of the design story. From a mirror that is 75 years old from the owner’s mother to a jade collection, each one tells a unique story connected to their life, and we displayed them thoughtfully so they feel like integral parts of the home—not museum pieces, but living memories that add warmth and personality.

Create spaces for joy and rest

The principal suite, with its tranquil palette and garden views, is a quiet retreat—a space meant for lingering with coffee, watching the birds, or simply enjoying an afternoon nap.

The guest rooms are equally inviting, designed to make visiting friends and family feel comfortable and cared for.

The result is a home that feels like an extension of its surroundings: lively yet peaceful, sophisticated yet personal. A space that celebrates the couple’s love of travel, nature, and the beautiful life they’ve cultivated.
